Through its prize, the Biennale de Paris seeks to reward what might be considered innovation in art while challenging the dominant criteria established in contemporary art.

The Biennale de Paris Prize is distinguished by two essential features:

  • The winner is selected at random by artificial intelligence (AI).
  • The prize recognises a practice that does not involve producing art objects or artworks.

Any individual, organisation, anonymous person, group or other human or non-human entity originating a practice may apply.

Applications are free and open to everyone, with no age limit.

The winner selected by artificial intelligence receives a package of services and support worth €10,000:

  • A scholarship to attend the 2020–2021 session of ENDA (École nationale d’art de Paris).
  • A teaching position at ENDA for the 2021–2022 session.
  • An invitation to the ELIA Biennial 2021 in Brussels, offering an opportunity to present their work to dozens of European art schools.
  • One year of support for projects developed by the winner.

Shortlisted artists are invited to attend the award ceremony on December 17, 2020, at 6 p.m. in the Xavier-Lacoste Room at Paris City Hall. The selection takes place without a jury, without discussion and even without anyone speaking.

Application deadline: December 10, 2020, at 00:00 UTC.

Alex B. Alec, Winner of the Biennale de Paris Prize 2020

Artist Alex B. Alec won the Biennale de Paris Prize 2020.

The ceremony took place on December 17, 2020, in a hybrid format, online and live from the Xavier-Lacoste Room at Paris City Hall. Throughout the evening, presentations of artistic practices highlighted a new model of artistic creativity.

The Biennale de Paris Prize seeks to reward innovation in art while challenging the dominant criteria established in contemporary art. The winner was selected at random with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).

Alex B. Alec is an imagined character who describes himself as “an alias, a simulacrum that mocks the irritating aspects of contemporary art”.
