The Biennale de Paris in Lebanon
27 June–3 July 2015
Beirut, Lebanon
The Biennale de Paris was founded in 1959 by André Malraux, then Minister of Culture, who envisioned it as a meeting place for experimenting with new approaches to an art of the future. It adheres to no regulatory framework that might hinder its actions within contemporary society and its political, economic and ideological transformations.
More broadly, it refuses to submit to the rules governing the conventional art world. By mixing genres, opening up boundaries and redistributing roles, the Biennale de Paris brings art into being where it is least expected.
The Biennale de Paris is a biennial without artworks, exhibitions, spectators, curators or an art market. It does not take place exclusively in Paris: it decentres itself to operate in specific contexts, each different from the last.
The Biennale de Paris in Beirut was conceived by participants in Session XI of the Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques (Iheap) in Paris as a comprehensive project within their curriculum, in collaboration with numerous Lebanese partners.
Iheap is a higher education institution dedicated to research and experimentation in art. It serves as the educational branch of the Biennale de Paris and offers a curriculum that enables participants to free themselves from the assumptions inherited from twentieth-century art history. It also explores some of the issues shaping twenty-first-century art, whose history is still being written.
