Invisual Art: A New Stage for Art Education and University Research
The École nationale d’art de Paris (ENDA) announces its partnership with the Research and Creation Centre of the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (ALBA) – University of Balamand, in Beirut, through the Invisual Art Research and Creation Workshop (ARCAI).
ARCAI is a research-creation project initiated by invisual artist Ricardo Mbarkho in collaboration with Alexandre Gurita, invisual artist and director of ENDA.
The two artists met in 1998 while studying at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris (ENSBA). They experimented with unprecedented artistic approaches to break free from the frameworks of contemporary art.
Their explorations contributed to the emergence of a new genre of art, which Alexandre Gurita named “invisual art” in 2004. Today, invisual art brings together an international ecosystem of artists and institutions that are reshaping the definition of art.
Directed by Ricardo Mbarkho, with Alexandre Gurita as its principal contributor, ARCAI brings together invisual artists, teachers, students, theorists and art historians, including Roxane Vidalon, Gary Bigot, Rose Marie Barrientos, Éric Monsinjon, Corina Chutaux Mila, Paul Ardenne, Mariem Memni, Ghislain Mollet-Viéville, Yosr Mahmoud, Loli Tsan and Gilbert Coqalane.
ARCAI provides a space for research, experimentation and creation devoted to forms of art that develop alternative socioeconomic models to those of the visual arts, notably by freeing themselves from the constraints of the art market.
Since the nineteenth century, the art market has helped impose a restrictive definition of art. ARCAI explores what art can become when it breaks free from these frameworks. It encourages interactions between art and practices often considered non-artistic according to contemporary social conventions.
